Finding hope in the pew

Why are people leaving the church? David Crumm shares the research and introduces a pastor reaching beyond the walls.
In this week’s Read the Spirit Editor David Crumm says, “We are reporting on a startling new Pew Research report about why Americans choose to join congregations– AND a new author who is trying to reach the millions of men and women who are still outside religious life, looking in.”

The most recent Pew Research Report reveals that 8 in 10 Americans say that the quality of the preaching is their Number One reason for joining a congregation. “The remarkable fact is,” notes Crumm, “Americans overwhelmingly say they really need inspirational messages, these days.”

Glenn Wagner offers uplifting messages. Wagner, familiar to United Methodists in the state as a pastor serving in West Michigan and the co-chair of the Michigan Conference Design Team, relates “stories about discovering God’s presence in the lives of ordinary people,” in his book, God Incidents: Real-Life Stories to Strengthen and Restore Your Faith.
