The Enneagram

Laity Page Banner

The Enneagram is an ancient system of 9 distinct and interrelated ways of viewing and experiencing the world. It's pronounced any-a-gram. Some bump against the word, but it’s simple. In Greek 'Ennea' means 9 and 'gram' means figure. It is known as 9 ways of seeing the world - 9 ways of being in the world – 9 ways of responding to the world.

It can be thought of as a personality typing tool, however, it is much more than that. The Enneagram focuses on motivations rather than behaviors, which is what makes it unique.

This system can be used for understanding others, improving relationships, building teams and spiritual growth. It can help us to find a deeper and more authentic relationship with God.

Like other typologies, it describes different character types. There are 9 core numbers and they all contain an inner dynamic within that aims at growth. It provides insight into habitual ways. It answers the questions: why do we do the things that we do? Why do I keep responding the same way over and over again?

This awareness of our patterns can bring choice and freedom in how we react. We don’t have to respond to things by habit, we can choose to react in a healthier way once we know our unhealthy habits.

There are a variety of ways to find out more and implement the Enneagram in your community.
