DeVine seeks episcopal office

The Rev. Dr. Jerome (Jerry) DeVine has discerned the call to become a nominee for the United Methodist episcopacy.
The Rev. Dr. Jerome (Jerry) DeVine currently serves as the Director of Connectional Ministries for The Detroit Conference of The Michigan Area.

A clergy member of the Detroit Conference, he has been in ministry in Michigan since 1999. DeVine’s work history includes Pastor of Kingswood UMC in Newark, Delaware; Lead Pastor of First UMC Chestertown, Maryland; Ministry Consultant for the West Michigan Conference; and Albion District Superintendent.

Jerry has a BA from Westmar College and a Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry from Wesley Theological Seminary. He is currently seeking a Graduate Certificate in Project Monitoring and Evaluation from American University.

He was on the staff of the General Board of Global Ministries and served for eight years on Board of the General Commission on Religion and Race (GCORR).

A number of United Methodist agencies, organizations and caucuses have recognized Rev. DeVine’s gifts and experiences and have announced their decision to support his election at the 2016 North Central Jurisdictional Conference which will be held in Peoria, IL July 14-17. These groups include:

  • Black Methodists for Church Renewal, Michigan Area
  • Detroit Conference Committee on Asian American Ministries
  • The Korean Caucus of Michigan
  • Native American Course of Study Advisory Board
  • North Central Jurisdiction Committee on Native American Ministries (CONAM)
  • United Methodist Black Clergy of Michigan
  • T.E.A.M. of Detroit Conference (Training and Equipping African-Americans for Ministry)

DeVine said, “We are in a potential watershed period in our denominational history, as well as in our world. This calling to the Episcopacy is truly focused on leading the transformation of the Church so that we might bring transformation to the world through the grace of Jesus Christ.”
