In mission through MMDC

Over 2,400 volunteers from across the Midwest travelled to Chatham, IL in 2016 to this UMCOR-related mission depot.

The Midwest Mission Distribution Center in Chatham, Illinois provides a hands-on experience for persons wanting to offer help to victims of disaster both in the U.S. and around the globe. Volunteers from Michigan were among those who packed kits, built school desks, fixed bikes and repaired sewing machines in 2016.

The MMDC’s recent newsletter gave the following year-end report:

  • 2,403 volunteers worked a total of 34,377 hours
  • 299,497 pounds of materials were received at MMDC and 446,727 pounds of materials were distributed
  • there were 17 shipments that went out of the country and 189 shipments were sent across the U.S.
  • nine countries outside the U.S. received goods: Ghana, Zambia, Uganda, Kenya, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Mexico and Panama.
  • UMCOR Kit totals: 6,936 Health Kits; 1,593 Layette Kits; 8,048 Cleaning Buckets; 2,121 School Kits; 1,278 Birthing Kits, 403 Sewing Kits; 52 Bedding Kits
  •  MMDC Kit totals: 17,158 School Bags; 271 Teacher Bags; 30,278 Personal Dignity Kits
  • 285 sewing machines, 576 school desks, and 493 bikes were also shipped
