Neil Armstrong was the first person to walk on the moon, but did you know that another astronaut was the first person to take Holy Communion in space?
July 20, 2019 marked the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. Three astronauts were part of this history-making venture: Mission Commander Neil Armstrong, Lunar Module Pilot Buzz Aldrin, Jr., and Command Module Pilot Michael Collins.
The Rev. C. Chappell Temple, lead pastor of Christ United Methodist Church, shares a childhood memory of what Armstrong called, “One small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.”
In his blog titled, “A Lunar Lord’s Supper,” Rev. Temple shares, “Like millions around the world, I was totally transfixed on the black and white television images that miraculously came wafting into our living room on July 20, 1969, from more than a quarter million miles away. What I didn’t know at the time, however, was what else happened on that Sunday five decades ago when Neil Armstrong became the first human being to ever walk on another world. For even as he prepared for that historic ‘giant leap for mankind,’ his companion, Buzz Aldrin, prepared for something else inside the Eagle, unpacking bread and wine from plastic containers and placing them on the abort guidance system computer.”
