Ash Wednesday is over and Lent is underway. It’s time to find God in the ordinary
The Rev. Dr. Frederick Schmidt is a Episcopal priest who holds the Rueben P. Job Chair in Spiritual Formation at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary and directs the Rueben Job Institute for Spiritual Formation.
In his recent blog on Patheos.com, Schmidt asserts that Lent is not a tightrope but a journey and offers four guides for moving through the season:
- The practices of Lent are not ends in themselves, they are an invitation to an encounter with God.
- If we aren’t listening for the voice of God, then the practice serves no real purpose.
- Let’s be gentle with ourselves.
- The purpose of self-examination and repentance is not about diminishing our lives.
