Lent is not a tightrope

Ash Wednesday is over and Lent is underway. It’s time to find God in the ordinary

The Rev. Dr. Frederick Schmidt is a Episcopal priest who holds the Rueben P. Job Chair in Spiritual Formation at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary and directs the Rueben Job Institute for Spiritual Formation.

In his recent blog on Patheos.com, Schmidt asserts that Lent is not a tightrope but a journey and offers four guides for moving through the season:

  1. The practices of Lent are not ends in themselves, they are an invitation to an encounter with God.
  2. If we aren’t listening for the voice of God, then the practice serves no real purpose.
  3. Let’s be gentle with ourselves.
  4. The purpose of self-examination and repentance is not about diminishing our lives.
