As the Year Turns October 1, 2016

Are you making the most of The Church Year as a guide for your congregation’s worship?

The West Michigan Chapter of the Fellowship of United Methodist Musicians and Other Artists (FUMMOA) is hosting a workshop on Saturday, October 1, 2016 at Holt United Methodist Church, 2321 N. Aurelius Road, Holt MI 48842.

The theme is “As the Year Turns” and the focus is the history of fine arts as applied to the liturgical calendar.

The event begins at 9 am and concludes at 2:15 pm.  

Workshop leaders are the Rev. Bufford Coe and Dr. Matthew Packer. They team up to offer creative ideas for Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent and Easter in the morning session and the Denominational, National Holidays and Ecumenical special services in the afternoon session.

Cost is $20 for FUMMOA members and $25 for non-members, which includes lunch.

Reverend Dr. Bufford Coe has been the pastor of Vicksburg United Methodist Church for the last 15 years. He has a Bachelor of Music degree from Michigan State University, a Master of Arts in Church Music and a Master of Divinity degree from the Methodist Theological School in Ohio, and a Doctor of Theology degree in worship and church history from Boston University.  Coe is the current president of the West Michigan chapter of the Fellowship.

Dr. Matthew J. Packer is currently serving as Choir and Handbell director at Flushing UMC in Flushing. He is the Choral Director at Mott Community College in Flint, director of the Flint Male Chorus, Music Director for Swartz Creek Center Stage Community Theater, and singer and pianist with the duo, Brother 2 Brother. Matt has been a church musician since 1983. He holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Music Education and a Doctor of Worship Studies degree from the Robert E. Webber Institute for Worship Studies in Orange Park, Florida. His Diaconal Studies in the 1990’s at the Methodist Theological School in Ohio led to  his Deacon Certification in 2012.
