VIM team to journey to Peru

Health workers meeting with family with child

An intergenerational Volunteers in Mission team from Michigan and Wisconsin is returning to Peru in December and needs volunteers, especially young adults. Apply by September 1.

A United Methodist Volunteers in Mission team is now forming with members from the North Central Jurisdiction for a short-term cultural immersion experience in Peru, from December 30, 2025, to January 10, 2026. September 1 is the application and deposit deadline.

This team welcomes young adults, ages 18 to 35, as part of VIM’s Discover … Mission Journey program, as well as other adults, ages 18 to 80. The dates that have been chosen will allow college and university students and those working to take less time off because of the holiday break.

The cost is $1,600 for food/lodging, internal travel, insurance, and project work (includes $100 deposit with application). Upon landing in Lima, all expenses are covered. Participants will purchase airfare on their own. Flight rates will vary from $700 to $1,000, depending on location.

If you have questions or would like to inquire further, contact Jody Pratt, the Michigan Conference’s VIM Coordinator, at prattgji09@gmail.com or 616-292-4908. She will also be able to send you the application.

Jody is co-leading this team with Steve Blake from the Wisconsin Conference. The team will partner with The Methodist Church of Peru (Iglesia Metodista del Perú) in the Lima/Calleo area. Participants will experience project work in health care as well as light construction work. The team will build relationships with our Peruvian partners and grow leadership skills and cross-cultural relationships. Being able to speak Spanish is not required.

Jody and Steve have worked to build a collaborative relationship with the Methodist churches and the community, and they look forward to returning. This will be the team’s fourth visit to the Junín region of Peru, which is considered an upland jungle. Read Heather Jue-Wong’s personal testimony about last year’s experience.

Limited scholarships are available. A person from a Michigan United Methodist congregation going on a VIM journey for the first time is eligible for a $150 scholarship from the Michigan Conference. Applications must be submitted at least 60 days before the trip begins. Click here to download the scholarship criteria.

Jody is also available to assist individuals with brainstorming ideas for raising money and encourages anyone interested in this mission journey to Peru to contact her.
