UM Foundation to offer stewardship grants

Bowl with cash in it

Does your congregation have a reputation for generosity in your community? Share your story by applying for a $2,500 steward leader grant by March 15.

MARIAN COLES
Sr. Director of Operations, United Methodist Foundation of Michigan

According to Wikipedia, stewardship is “an ethical value that embodies the responsible planning and management of resources.” It was originally used to describe the role of a house steward and centered around the hospitality tasks of caring for guests and running a household.

The Wayne C. Barrett Steward Leader Award was established by the United Methodist Foundation of Michigan’s Board of Directors upon Dr. Barrett’s retirement as President and Executive Director to honor up to four United Methodist congregations for their exemplary stewardship ministry and culture of generosity.

For Dr. Barrett, stewardship was not only managing resources but also living with joy and gratitude for God’s blessings. He believed in sharing these blessings with others, especially those with less. The award continues this belief, encouraging churches to embrace sound financial stewardship beyond their walls and serve their communities.

The award recognizes churches that display collaborative leadership in finances, a clear mission and vision, adherence to financial procedures outlined in the Book of Discipline, a culture of generosity beyond budgetary constraints, and a reputation for generosity in the community. The Foundation seeks to recognize churches that inspire others to witness God’s generosity and love through their acts of service, giving, and investment, with up to four awards annually.

If your church embodies these values, we invite you to apply for a $2,500 award. Let your story of commitment to sound financial stewardship and community investment shine brightly and inspire others to follow in your footsteps. The deadline for applications is March 15, 2024.
