Fall grant and funding workshops

Grant highlighted in a dictionary

Several online workshops and training sessions on grant writing and nontraditional funding sources will be held this fall. The first one, Grant Writing 101, is set for August 25, providing an optional overview of the new Ministry Innovation Grants funded by the Michigan Conference.

Lisa Batten, Associate Director for Connectional Ministries for the Michigan Conference, will be leading each of these offerings. If you have questions about any of them, email her at lbatten@michiganumc.org.

Grant Writing 101

Grants are funding sources for existing or new ministry ideas, facility repairs, or new builds. Knowing where to look and how to write a grant can be challenging and even intimidating. Participants in this workshop will gain an understanding of a theology of fundraising, begin to craft a compelling purpose statement and sketch out a timeline, begin to draft a budget, and learn where to look for grants. There is a $10 registration fee.

Additionally, for those interested, there will be a 20-minute overview of the new Michigan Conference Ministry Innovation Grants, which were announced at the 2025 Michigan Annual Conference (set at a $2,500 minimum each). The window for grant applications will open on September 2.

When? Same content, two time options: Monday, August 25, at noon Eastern or at 6 pm Eastern. Register now.

GrantStation Training

Are you ready to search for grants to fund your ministry, program, or event? This training will prepare participants to use the GrantStation search tool as one option for finding grants that align with their church’s or organization’s priorities and funding needs. There is a $10 registration fee.

When? Same content, two time options: Wednesday, September 3, at 9:30 am Eastern or at 6 pm Eastern. Register now.

Fund Development 101

This training is designed for faith communities and nonprofits that are beginning to diversify their funding sources. We are aware that in many places tithes and offerings can no longer fully fund the budget, and we continue to experience the effects of post-COVID-19 funding shifts. Participants will explore a theology of fund development, create a case for support, review needed infrastructure to receive and manage funds, and explore potential funding sources. There is a $10 registration fee per organization.

When? Same content, two time options: Monday, October 13, at 12:30 pm Eastern or at 6 pm Eastern. Register now.
