In June, the Michigan Conference will host several online workshops and trainings on grant writing and nontraditional funding sources.
Lisa Batten, Associate Director for Connectional Ministries for the Michigan Conference, will be leading each of these offerings. If you have questions about any of them, email her at lbatten@michiganumc.org.
Here are endorsements from two persons who have attended past courses on grant writing and fund development:
Mary Pickett from Redford Brightmoor Initiative, an EngageMI Ministry Partner: “I’ve recently taken several grant writing classes from Lisa. She is very knowledgeable about grants, and the classes are excellent: well-organized, with lots of practical information, helpful handouts, and good student discussion. As a result, we’ve filled out one major grant application and just learned of another grant that looks perfect for our needs.”
Rev. Kim Bos, campus minister at Wesley House at Ferris State University: “Receiving this grant was a game changer for our intentional community housing and the students who live there. It allowed us to make long-overdue upgrades to our living space, host meaningful community-building events, and provide meals for our monthly meetings, keeping students nourished while fostering a warm and familiar atmosphere. These improvements have enhanced our physical environment and deepened the connections among our students, creating a lasting sense of belonging and support that will extend far beyond their time here.”
Fund Development 101
This training is for faith communities and nonprofits beginning to diversify their funding sources. We know in many places tithes and offerings can no longer fully fund the budget, and we continue to experience the effects of post-COVID-19 funding shifts. Participants will explore a theology of fund development, create a case for support, review needed infrastructure to receive and manage funds, and explore potential funding sources. There is a $10 registration fee per organization.
When? Same content, two time options: Wednesday, June 11, at 9:30 am Eastern or at 6 pm Eastern. Register now.
Grant Writing 101
Grants are funding sources for existing or new ministry ideas, facility repairs, or new builds. Knowing where to look and how to write a grant can be challenging and even intimidating. Participants in this workshop will gain an understanding of a theology of fundraising, begin to craft a compelling purpose statement and sketch out a timeline, begin to draft a budget, and learn where to look for grants. There is a $10 registration fee.
When? Same content, two days and times: Monday, June 16, at 6 pm Eastern or Thursday, June 19, at 9:30 am Eastern. Register now.
GrantStation Training
Are you ready to search for grants to fund your ministry, program, or event? This training will prepare participants to use the GrantStation search tool as one option for finding grants that align with their church or organization’s priorities and funding needs. There is a $10 registration fee.
When? Same content, two time options: Tuesday, June 24, at 9:30 am Eastern or at 6 pm Eastern. Register now.
