United Methodists around the world will join together to change lives on UMC #GivingTuesday.
The world will celebrate Giving Tuesday tomorrow, November 28th.
Giving Tuesday happens on the Tuesday directly after American Thanksgiving, which in turn takes place on the 4th Thursday of November. Giving Tuesday was created to help the “giving season” get started, reminding people that there is more to holidays than consumerism and commercialization. Giving Tuesday was started by two organizations in 2012 and since that time many others have joined those founding partners.
The General Board of Global Ministries first engaged the effort in 2013, making this year the fifth UMC#Giving Tuesday.
In 2016, Michigan United Methodists were among the more than 2,550 people from 19 countries who gave gifts of more than $850,000 toward Global Ministries missionary support and Advance projects. The General Board of Global Ministries thanks everyone for their faithful giving through The Advance, the designated giving channel of The United Methodist Church.
.
Frederick Buechner once described “calling” as the place “where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.” One of the great things about The Advance is it allows individuals and congregations to invest resources where their passion answers specific needs in the world.
The UMC #GivingTuesday theme this year is “Connect Your Passion with God’s Mission.”
All Advance Projects are included in this effort. United Methodists of the Michigan Area may wish to give special consideration to:
- Advance Specials supporting ministry in Haiti and Liberia, the Michigan covenant conferences;
- National Justice For our Neighbors, Advance #901285.
- Global Mission Fellows: Isaac Dunn Advance #3022220 ; Grace Okerson Advance #3022329; and Lynda Sylvain Advance #3022358
The Advance is a great way to connect your passion with God’s mission. At UMCmission.org/Give, you can browse and search more than 600 United Methodist-related projects and more than 300 United Methodist missionaries to find the best fit for your generosity. And remember: When you give to The Advance, 100 percent of your gift goes directly to the cause you specify.
