Build relationships for a new tomorrow

  The Detroit Conference Commission on Religion and Race has teamed with the Commission on Christian Unity and Interreligious Relationships to bring timely workshop to the Michigan Area.

Beyond the Divide will be held at Big Beaver United Methodist Church, 3753 John R Road in Troy, on Saturday, April 25th. This is an opportunity to worship, learn and move beyond the divisions in our society and in our neighborhoods. Registration and gathering will take place between 8:30 and 9:00 am. Participants will be dismissed for action at 2:45 pm. The keynote speaker is the Rev. F. Willis Johnson, pastor at the Wellspring Church in Ferguson, MO. Rev. Johnson is an educator, servant leader, and entrepreneur committed to development of self and others by leading forward. Pastor Willis and the congregation have provided significant ministries of reconciliation in the their community.   • Diversity and Inclusion Issues with Steve Spreitzer, Chair of Michigan Roundtable, Diversity and Inclusion Section;
  • We’ve Come This Far By Faith: The Church as a Beloved Community with the Rev. Kennetha Bigham-Tsai, Lansing District Superintendent;
  • Interfaith Relations with Dr. Olaf R. Lidums, Assistant Professor at Ecumenical Theological Seminary;
  • Practical Spirituality also by Dr. Olaf R. Lidums;
  • Abolishing Nuclear Weapons and Inequality with the Rev. Rich Peacock, co-chair Peace Action of Michigan

A panel discussion—Tools for Creating Positive Relationships—will be moderated by Rev. Jerry DeVine. Panelists include Deputy Gary Claudio (Oakland County Sheriff’s Office); Rev. Dr. Tara Sutton (Crossroads District Superintendent); Rev. Dr. Anthony Hood (Scott Memorial UMC, Detroit); and a member of the Asian American community. The closing Service with Communion will be led by Rev. Melanie L. Carey, Superintendent of the Detroit Renaissance District.
