Apply now for these UMC scholarships

Students seek scholarships

Do you know a student who is working on financial support for higher education? Metropolitan UMC in Detroit and the United Methodist Higher Education Foundation are taking applications for scholarships now.

The United Methodist Higher Education Foundation and Metropolitan United Methodist Church of Detroit remind students of scholarships available for the coming academic year. Please pass this information on to United Methodist scholars who may be eligible for this assistance.

UMHEF scholarship deadline to apply is March 1, 2021

UMHEF’s two main programs are General Named Endowed (GNE) Scholarships and the United Methodist Dollars for Scholars (UMDFS) program. The GNE application is a competitive scholarship that considers leadership, GPA, and financial need. With this one application, students will be considered for over 100 different endowments.

Applicants must be members of The United Methodist Church planning to attend a United Methodist-related school, college, university, or seminary for the 2021-2022 school year.

The UMDFS program is the foundation’s most popular program. It starts with a $1,000 scholarship from a student’s home UMC. If selected, this scholarship is matched by UMHEF to total $2,000. Participating UM schools and UM Conference Foundations may each match the initial scholarship to total up to $4,000. Participants can be found here.

Finally, more information on eligibility criteria and the application process can be found here. Applications and supporting materials must be submitted/postmarked by the approaching deadline of March 1.

The grand vision of UMHEF is that it be financially possible for qualified United Methodist students to attend a United Methodist-related institution of higher education. Annually, the Foundation provides over 1,000 UMC students with scholarships totaling more than $2 million.

Please Note: Scholarships offered by UMHEF are separate from those offered by the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry. You must apply for UMHEF scholarships using our applications. Learn more about those opportunities here.

Detroit Metropolitan UMC Centennial Scholarship deadline is May 14, 2021

Methodists have a history of commitment to Christian higher education. We at Metropolitan United Methodist Church are committed to helping those we believe will be the future leaders in the Church and the community. Many Metropolitan’s members and friends have provided the Centennial Scholarship Fund to help deserving full-time United Methodist students attend college, university, or graduate school.

All students who are active members of The United Methodist Church are eligible to apply for a Centennial Scholarship. The application process includes an essay, “Why the church is important in my life.”

Persons chosen are honored and recognized as William K. Quick Centennial Scholars, so named to honor Metropolitan’s Senior Pastor from June 1974 through July 1, 1998.

This is a tuition-based scholarship. The amount awarded in 2020 was $1,700; the 2021 scholarship is subject to market conditions. The number of scholarship renewals may be limited; students must apply each year.

Please read the full requirements on the Centennial Scholarship application forms below and fulfill the required documentation by the May 14, 2021 deadline.
