Human Relations Day extends a hand to those in crisis so they may overcome life’s obstacles.
On Jan. 15, 2017, United Methodists will celebrate God’s call to empower people who struggle and equip change agents to transform the world. The offering is taken each year on the Sunday prior to the observance of the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Turn on the news or drive around the outskirts of any town and you will find what Jesus called “the least of these.” Those living in the margins of society, struggling to survive. People like:
- An immigrant teenager in Texas’ poorest county, being recruited by a local gang
- a young child in Buffalo, New York with failing grades
- A father struggling for sobriety in Little Rock, Arkansas
- An Oklahoma woman recently released from incarceration looking for work
Over and over Jesus served people like this, embracing them. To continue the ministry of Jesus The United Methodist Church established Human Relations Day as a Special Sunday that calls all churches to participate in helping all God’s children to realize their potential.

Generous gifts through the Human Relations Day offering support the Community Developers Program, United Methodist Voluntary Services and the Youth Offender Rehabilitation Program. While January 15 is the official designation, congregations may support the work of Human Relations Day at a date more suitable on their church calendar.
