A story of tolerance

Bishop David Bard uses Dr. Seuss to bring into focus the things that unite United Methodist.

Judy Putnam of The Lansing State Journal recently sat down with Bishop David Bard in his office on the northeast side of the city. The Sneetch on his shelf was a conversation starter.

“Turns out Theodor Geisel’s tale of tolerance could come in handy for adults, too,” says Putnam. “It’s a contentious time as the church tries to stem membership loss and grapple with a disagreement over gay rights that’s threatened to divide the denomination.”

Bishop Bard concludes, ““It’s not a bad metaphor for thinking about the United Methodist Church. Hopefully we can find ways for us to find our commonalities that are deeper than our differences.”
