Water filters for Flint

A recent headline from mlive read, "Water troubles everywhere." Listing various problems stretching from Mackinaw City to Toledo, the news agency spoke of the critical situation in Flint.
"As a cost-saving move, Flint switched to using water from the Flint River in 2014 after 50 years of buying it from Detroit. The city plans to pipe in Lake Huron water, but that system won't be complete until next year. Unfortunately, the river water is more corrosive on city pipes and is contaminating the tap water with lead levels exceeding federal limits."

In the face of the water supply crisis, the Cross Roads District of the Detroit Conference is calling United Methodists to prayerful reflection on United Methodist Social Principles concerning The Natural World and Resolutions concerning  Protection of Water, and Environmental Stewardship.

Further, the Cross Roads District suggests these responses:

  • Donation of funds to purchase NSF graded water faucet filters to be distributed at local Flint Area United Methodist churches. (South-Flint: Lincoln Park; Central-Flint: Calvary; East -Flint: Asbury; Central-Flint: Court Street; North- Flint: Charity or Faith UMCs. Churches are encouraged to take a special offering to go towards the purchase of NSF graded water faucet filters by November 1, 2015. Send donations to the Crossroads District Office, 1309 N. Ballenger Hwy., #2 Flint, MI 48504; checks payable to the Crossroads District.
  • Donation of bottled water to Flint Community Schools. Deliver to Flint schools from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on weekdays. Large donations can be made at the maintenance and operations building, 3086 E. Court St. from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. weekdays. Schedule drop offs with Mike Loll at (810) 760-1310, extension 1.
