The congregation has merged with Lake Harbor UMC and they have gifted the building to Family Promise of the Lakeshore. This house of God will now house the homeless.

Peggy currently serves as Vice President of the national organization. While in Portland the group sponsored GC4JC, an outreach to the city's homeless.

ANN ARBOR DISTRICT ... Rev. Joy Barrett, pastor of Chelsea First UMC speaks on the floor of the General Conference in favor of Rule 44, an alternative group discernment process that General Conference could approve for use on “challenging” conversations.

GRAND RAPIDS DISTRICT ... Glenys Nellist was in ministry at the Children's Sabbath celebration at Grand Rapids: St. Paul's UMC. Pastor Erin Fitzgerald says, "My heart is so full of love for these kiddos and our community of faith."

DISTRICT ... Justice For Our Neighbors West Michigan celebrates their Burmese refugee client Ning being one step away from becoming a U.S. citizen. GRAND RAPIDS DISTRICT ... Trinity UMC Grand Rapids was recently award Assessment 1 Credentialing to be an ICARE program with the Partners for a Racism Free Community. This has been an 18-month process of policy design, ministry alignment, and intentional education on racism free infrastructures and work place. Trinity was the only faith based organization/company to receive this accreditation this year, and the only United Methodist Church to be recognized. LANSING DISTRICT ... The newly-designated special parking spaces at University UMC in East Lansing receive a lot of use each Sunday. Just last Sunday before the worship service, Bishop Kiesey said, "The new spots are wonderful and it's exciting to have them become available. MARQUETTE DISTRICT ... "Here they come!" On May 2nd the folks of Escanaba 1st and Bark River UMCs again joined forces to provide the Monday Night Supper at Bay College. Two Global Mission Fellows, Chelsea Spryes (l) left and Chelsea Williams (r), take a break from their ministry at NOAH Project to enjoy the Musical Swings in Campus Martius. Chelsea Spyres will soon travel to Portland to be a presenter of the Young People's Address at General Conference.  

ANN ARBOR DISTRICT ... Disciples of all sizes transformed the world in Frakes, Kentucky. Five adults and fourth children and youth from Brighton First UMC took a four-day trip to Henderson Settlement. Some people pick up beach balls, skis or a good book during spring break. THANKS FOR THE MEMORY ... Rev. Tamara Williams (l) remembers her friend on the Cabinet, Rev. Joanne Bartelt, shown together in Israel in 2011. Joanne, a clergywoman in the Detroit Conference whose last appointment was as Superintendent of the Blue Water District, died April 13.

This years grads are (l-r): Luana Tung (Michigan Law School), Shelby Mitchinson, Matt Grubish, Lukonde Mulenga (Bachelors degrees), and Will Crawford with a Masters in Higher Ed. KALAMAZOO DISTRICT ...  Rev. Greg Lawton, Director of Wesley Fellowship at Grand Valley State University, recently received  a "Sustainability Champion Award" (lower left)  from GVSU. Greg was recognized for his support of those who work and volunteer at the farm surrounding the Wesley House. DETROIT RENAISSANCE DISTRICT ... Metropolitan United Methodist Church was the site for the Third Every Baby Deserves a Royal Welcome Event. The gifts benefit the women and the children of Cass Community Social Services. Participants "had fun but we also shared some light." Christ will come again!"

DETROIT RENAISSANCE DISTRICT ... A great worship service and fellowship meal launched the Vietnamese United Methodist Fellowship of Madison Heights on Sunday, April 3. The congregation welcomed their new pastor from San Diego, Nhan Duc Nguyen.

SAGINAW BAY DISTRICT ... The DRIVE Ministry rehabs and gives away computers in Jesus' name. They just celebrated their 1000th gift computer. GRAND TRAVERSE DISTRICT ... Good Friday in Mancelona. A solemn and beautiful tradition - carrying the cross through the streets of the village. GRAND RAPIDS DISTRICT ... Young Adults from Grand Rapids First UMC volunteer at Well House. Says group leader, Sami Marasigan, "I love volunteering with Well House! When Tami Vandenberg told me about Well House's mission to move people who are homeless into housing, through the Housing First Model, I knew this was an organization we needed to partner with. Our faith pushes us to love our neighbors (Well House is just a mile up the road) and make a impact in the lives around us." See more at Well House.

DETROIT RENAISSANCE DISTRICT ... Detroit Central United Methodist Church took the Cross of Jesus to the streets and byways of the city on Good Friday. DETROIT RENAISSANCE DISTRICT ... Staff members at Cass Community Social Services had a contest ... which building could collect the most bottled water for Flint? The Scott Building won! GLOBAL PARTNERS ... Oh, what a beautiful morning in Zambia! Michigan churches that support the Mujila Falls Agriculture Centre there will be delighted to see the corn climbing toward the sky. DETROIT RENAISSANCE ... Chelsea Williams is a US-2 serving at NOAH Project in Detroit. On March 16 she was celebrating: "For those of you following my adventures in Detroit, you may remember that in October I accidentally ordered 2500 hot dogs. Five months later, I am happy to report that NOAH has served all of the hot dogs!"

DETROIT CONFERENCE ... The Rev. Ut To (l) is a clergy member of the Detroit Conference living and serving in Vietnam as Director of The United Methodist Initiative there. This month he and others are motorcycling around the country to visit church plants and to evangelize. Pastor Ut says, "It is my pleasure to share with you the blessings of Na Nhan UMC. This church is one of Hmong new churches here in the Dien Bien province. It was built by its members as a place to worship and share God’s love with each other and with others in the community. Na Nhan UMC started out with 30 people but has doubled over a year."

HEARTLAND DISTRICT .. Another new member is baptized at New Hope UMC in Mecosta. Rev. Greg Buchner welcomes Bryan into the family of God. In the tradition of Wesley, the pastor will immerse, sprinkle or pour, "depending on what the person being baptized is led to do." See more at New Hope Church

DETROIT RENAISSANCE DISTRICT ... who says being a disciple can't be fun? Detroit Renaissance District United Methodist Men were among the volunteers at the Northwest Detroit Flood Recovery Project last month. They and others like them continue to battle muck and mold more than a year and a half after torrential rains devastated property and disrupted lives in the city. ALBION DISTRICT .. This week at Real Life Church, a Tuesday evening experience at Battle Creek Baseline UMC. Forrest Baker joins his wife, Pastor Peggy Baker, for a dialogue sermon on marriage. It was part of a series, Pray Without Ceasing: When Couples Pray. "Here's the bottom line…God wants your marriage to be awesome! He wants it to be a source of joy, not pain and hurt. LANSING DISTRICT ... Portland literally raised the roof when Pastor Tish Bowman arrived at her new appointment in July 2015. A tornado ripped through the town and left the UMC and other churches in shambles. The congregation and Pastor Tish were able to move back into the building February 21st. GRAND RAPIDS DISTRICT ... The Rev. Jan Johnson, Local Pastor serving at Mercy Hospital in Muskegon visits Agua Prieta, Mexico with Western Seminary. Every Tuesday  a vigil remembers people who have died migrating across the desert. The names of individuals are written on the crosses.

KALAMAZOO DISTRICT ... United Methodist Women of Allegan UMC open umbrellas to intercept human trafficking. On Sunday, February 7, 2016, the Super Bowl will take place in Santa Clara, California. A high profile game like this intensifies the space where human trafficking can occur. That's why United Methodist Women has asked members to join the Intercept the Traffickers photo campaign. DETROIT RENAISSANCE DISTRICT ... Rev. Amy Mayo-Moyle does sermon preparation along with 100 other friends from Orchard UMC in Farmington. Says one ready to move from a theatre seat to a pew: "I've thought about a couple of stories from the Bible that have similar situations but I think Pastor Amy will surprise us by looking at some of the actions in a different light." GRAND RAPIDS/SAGINAW BAY DISTRICTS ... Paul Hillman, member at Grand Rapids Trinity UMC travelled to Ames UMC in Saginaw to pick up eight laptops from the Drive Ministry. Drive Ministry is refurbishing computer hardware and sharing out through the Michigan Area Haiti Taskforce partnership. SAGINAW BAY DISTRICT ... Michelson Memorial UMC in Grayling has been serving up free dinners every Monday night since March ... about 100 each seating, 2,877 meals as of Dec. 15 and counting. As noted by Pastor Richard Burstall on their Facebook page: "The best part for me was the volunteers. They came in, knew exactly what to do, when to do it, and how to do it. THEY KICKED ME OUT OF THE KITCHEN!!!! We are so blessed to have such committed people to serve and willing to give up their time to feed those who need it." See more at Michelson Memorial.

CROSSROADS DISTRICT ... The project starts in April. The knitters and crocheters of Hope United Methodist Church, Flint Township pick up their needles and get to work. By December they are ready to give a gift bag to every child at Dye Elementary School. Sharing moments of joy as the children choose a matching hat/mittens/scarf set.

DETROIT RENAISSANCE DISTRICT ... Members of Birmingham 1st UMC shared candy canes, hot chocolate and Christmas carols with the neighbors of nearby Berkley UMC (discontinued at the 2015 Detroit Annual Conference). JAMAICA ... Rev. Kay Pratt shares the Advent story with children in the youth group of the Port Antonio Circuit. Kay and her husband, the Rev. Merlin Pratt are the founders and directors of PAPA's Ministries. (Pastors and Priests Available for service). The Pratts are Associate Members of the West Michigan Conference.

GRAND RAPIDS DISTRICT ...  Many saw the interviews on TV inspired by the photo of the Birthday Cake that Lisa Aldrich purchased and had decorated at Meijer. Did she look familiar? Those who have attended the West Michigan Annual Conference might recognize Lisa as a worship leader in that setting. Lisa, a member at Cornerstone UMC, says, "I never asked for all this publicity, I just wanted people to consider being nice to each other." 

GRAND RAPIDS DISTRICT ... An Interfaith Thanksgiving Celebration was hosted by Trinity United Methodist Church in Grand Rapids on November 23. Familiar faces participating in the multi-lingual welcome: l-r from microphone Pros Tumonong, Nohemi Ramirez and John Ross Thompson. It was the 16th annual interfaith gathering. ANN ARBOR DISTRICT ... MERGE--worship and fun for all ages--happens every Tuesday night at Saline UMC. On Dec. 1 at  the crowds started to gather for the much anticipated birth of baby Jesus. Members of the UMVIM Team spent time at the Grace Children's Hospital during their Oct. -Nov.  trip to Haiti. Before the 2010 earthquake, the Children's Hospital had 65 beds and they now have 15 but that does not limit the compassion and care they share. MARQUETTE DISTRICT ... Meanwhile, half a world away in the U.P., Escanaba First celebrates a milestone. Every Sunday a straw basket is passed through the pews to gather contributions for Grace Children's Hospital in Haiti. On November 22 the congregation passed the $55,000 mark. KALAMAZOO DISTRICT ... Justice For Our Neighbors West Michigan has expanded its ministry once again. On November 10 they opened a JFON Site at Kalamazoo First UMC. Now free illegal services for immigrants are available in Grand Rapids, Holland, Traverse City and Kalamazoo. LANSING DISTRICT... Green Giant Award to Grovenburg UMC that grows mighty fine produce to donate to the Holt community Food Bank. They use elevated beds in the Ted Johnson Memorial Food Bank Garden. They have gardened for 7 years now.  This year's crop included two kinds of lettuce, two kinds of chives, three kinds of onions, carrots, radishes, green beans, green peppers and two kinds of tomatoes.
