Jonathan Gipson is a lifelong resident of the Detroit community, a journey that has shaped his character from childhood through adulthood. For Jonathan, community has always been deeply intertwined with faith. He has been a dedicated member of Trinity Faith UMC his entire life.
Jonathan’s commitment to his church family is woven into his weekly life. Every Sunday, you can find him behind the scenes, managing the technical audio and visual components for worship, or stepping up to serve as worship leader and liturgist as needed. He also lifts his voice with the Holy Steppers choir on the third and fourth Sundays of the month, and he looks forward to volunteering each summer with youth day events and activities for children.
Professionally, Jonathan holds a bachelor’s degree in business. Balancing a full-time career with personal growth, he is pursuing an MBA to advance his professional development.
Grounded in his faith, deep Detroit roots, and drive to grow, Jonathan was deeply honored to represent Trinity Faith UMC Church at this year’s Black Methodists for Church Renewal (BMCR) celebration. In addition to business, the June 13, 2026, event celebrated Juneteenth and honored laity from predominantly Black congregations and from cross-racial/cross-cultural charges served by Black clergy. One member of Trinity Faith said, “Jonathan commits his time and talents to our church in many ways — his service, commitment, and tremendous capabilities are deeply appreciated! Jon has been a key part of our AV team over the past few years, mastering the technology, delivering great visuals, troubleshooting like a pro, and bringing his humor along the way. All this while also attending graduate school and working two jobs. Jonathan is a real blessing!”
Another member noted, “Jonathan steps in on Sunday morning to lead the worship service when asked, provided his schedule allows. He’s part of the youth choir and enjoys singing and praising the Lord. He’s a young man we at Trinity Faith UMC are proud to call a member.”

Laity Sunday is one of the five Awareness Sundays in The United Methodist Church. Usually observed on the third Sunday in October, it is an opportunity to celebrate the vital role of the laity — the everyday members who live out their faith and serve in their local churches and communities.
This year, Laity Sunday falls on October 18. If that date doesn’t align with your church’s calendar, choose a date that works better for your church. The theme is “Be grounded in Love” (Ephesians 3:17), which also echoes the Michigan Conference’s theme this year: Love Boldly. There is no offering associated with Laity Sunday.
