Midland Daily News reports on two UMCOR case managers, Katie Vokal and Anne Wortley, who are concluding flood recovery efforts.
“Our goal is to spend every penny and leave it right here in the community.” That’s what Katie Vokal recently told Kate Carlson, reporter for the Midland Daily News.
Carlson’s report, “Flood relief workers reflect on a year of work in Midland,” tells the story of how Katie and her co-worker, Anne Wortley, assisted 103 families who were affected by torrential flooding in July 2017.
“This was devastating,” Anne said. “We met a lot of people who shed a lot of tears, and were very thankful for the help we were able to provide.”
Katie and Anne were trained by the United Methodist Committee on Relief. An UMCOR grant paid their salaries and also provided funding for direct assistance. They were supported in their work by Michigan Conference Disaster Response Coordinator, Dan O’Malley, who helped with volunteer recruitment.
