Michigan offers two satellite training sites

June 17, 2015—This year, the School of Congregational Development (SCD) will host two new satellite broadcasts during its upcoming SCD 2015 “Crossroads” event in Indianapolis, August 13-16, 2015. The conference, hosted by the Indiana Annual Conference, will offer participants live broadcasts in Spanish and English.

For four years, SCD in partnership with Global Ministries has provided offsite participation, made available through target congregations in five jurisdictions. And, each year, online participation has increased—beginning with five sites and now up to 18 sites for 2015.  However, this year will be the first time a live broadcast will be available entirely in Spanish and where participants can boost their learning experience by interacting with presenters and sharing ministry tools, techniques and strategies. The registration fee is $10 per person for the two-hour Friday evening broadcast and $29 for the 5½-hour Saturday broadcast. Here are the details:

Friday, August 14 – 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. (ET) (Spanish)

Join a two-hour live, interactive discussion in Spanish entitled “Forming Leaders in the Local Church” with presenter Dr. Iosmar Álvarez, a native of Cuba representing the Kentucky Annual Conference, who will share years of ministry practice around leadership development that will help congregations multiply and make disciples of Jesus Christ.

Saturday, August 15 – 10:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. (ET) (English)

For a full day experience, join two presenters, the Rev. John Edgar, founding pastor the United Methodist Church for All People, Columbus, Ohio, and Dr. B. Kevin Smalls, pastor of Queens Chapel United Methodist Church in Washington D.C., who is also a leader in guiding congregations to create innovative worship experiences. The two different presenters and their approaches will align with the common desired results of building up God’s Kingdom.

Nora Colemares, a Global Ministries executive for Congregation Development and Racial Ethnic Ministries, said, “This is an opportunity for participants to engage with presenters in real time and exchange ministry practices and expertise.  We are especially excited to connect with Hispanic/Latino leaders by offering a Spanish-only broadcast, where they can be empowered to express ideas within the context of their ministry and in the comfort of their home language.”

The School of Congregational Development is a premier event for United Methodist leaders for equipping conference leaders, clergy, and laity to lead vital, dynamic, life-changing congregations. Hosted by the Indiana Conference, this year’s focus is on Crossroads, where community, culture, and faith come together to offer the message of love and grace as found in Jesus Christ.
