Foundation posts scholarship awards

Group of college students

The United Methodist Foundation of Michigan announces scholarship recipients through the UM Dollars for Scholars program for the 2024-2025 academic year.

The United Methodist Foundation of Michigan is delighted to announce its matching UM Dollars for Scholars Awards for the 2024-2025 academic year. This initiative aims to support students pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees at United Methodist-related colleges and universities through collaborative financial assistance. The following students are this year’s recipients:

Carly Fraser – Albion: First UMC
Katherine Haar – Clarkston UMC
Chalondra Jewell – Southfield: Hope UMC
Allison Mayo-Moyle – Clarkston UMC
Zach McNees – Battle Creek: Chapel Hill UMC
Kayla Meredith – Wyoming Park UMC

The UM Dollars for Scholars program is a joint effort involving generous contributions from participating churches, the United Methodist Higher Education Foundation (UMHEF), United Methodist-related schools, and United Methodist foundations. This coordinated effort ensures eligible students receive substantial financial support to further their educational pursuits.

“We are excited to continue our tradition of supporting higher education within our community through the UM Dollars for Scholars Matching Awards,” said Rev. Dr. David S. Bell, president and executive director of the foundation. “These scholarships not only alleviate financial burdens but also strengthen our bonds with local churches and demonstrate our commitment to supporting congregations.”

Here’s how the program works: Eligible churches can sponsor students with a $1,000 scholarship. UMHEF then matches this amount, totaling $2,000. Participating United Methodist-related schools may contribute an additional $1,000, while United Methodist conference foundations can match up to $1,000 based on their participation level.

This structured approach allows students to potentially receive awards up to $4,000. The program underscores the commitment of the foundation and its partners to support the academic aspirations of students within the United Methodist tradition.

Bob Fletcher, UMHEF president and CEO, commented, “The United Methodist Foundation of Michigan has been a faithful friend for many years in lending life-changing support as a matching partner in the UM Dollars for Scholars program. We are grateful for their generous partnership.”

Students interested in applying for the UM Dollars for Scholars Matching Awards for the 2025-2026 academic year are encouraged to review the eligibility criteria and application details on the UMHEF website (click here). The date for the next application deadline will be announced in early 2025. Applications must be submitted annually for consideration.
