The United Methodist Committee on Relief raises the alarm concerning the epic drought in Ethiopia.
Ethiopia is experiencing one of the worst droughts in decades. The El Niño weather event continues to wreak havoc on communities and families in numerous parts of the world.
As a result of the drought, malnutrition rates have greatly increased — 450,000 children are expected to be treated for severe malnutrition, and a further 2.2 million children and pregnant and lactating women will be treated for moderate acute malnutrition.
The latest 2016 Humanitarian Requirements Document released in December 2015, estimates that this year, 6 million children are at risk from hunger, disease, and lack of water.
The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) recently approved a grant to support partner International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC) in providing a three-month supply of nutritious food, a corn-soya blend, to about 7,080 people in the Kewet Woreda, North Shoa Zone, Amhara Region of Ethiopia. Food supplies will go to malnourished children under 5 years of age, pregnant and lactating mothers, and those living with HIV and AIDS.
