Dorothy J. Smith

September 8, 1929 – February 2, 2025

Wife of Rev. Dr. Rev. Dr. Robert Charles Smith Jr. , with heartfelt admiration and deep respect, we remember the life of Dorothy Jane Smith, fondly known as “Dot,” who was born on September 8, 1929, and departed this life on February 2, 2025. Dorothy was a beacon of compassion, humility, and resilience, her spirit characterized by her unwavering generosity. A longtime resident of Grand Rapids, Michigan, she previously lived in Brighton, in Owosso, which she considered her hometown, and Saranac, all in Michigan.

Dorothy was a dedicated Christian and a devoted member of the South United Methodist and later Trinity United Methodist Church for some 75 years. Her faith was the anchor of her life, as she exemplified the Methodist ethos of open hearts, open minds, and open doors. She served as a secretary and worked for The United Methodist Church West Michigan Conference (under the last name Jaffas), where she was known for her humble service and unshakeable faith. Her life was a living testament to the verse from 1 Corinthians 16:14, “Let all that you do be done in love.”

What mattered most to Dorothy was her deep love and affection for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by her son Glenn, her daughter Elaine, her daughter-in-law Rose, her grandchildren Regan, Ashley and Jillian, and her great-grandchildren Cece, Ari, and Quinn. Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents Clarence Crandell and Ruby Crandell, the man who raised her Fred Stanton, the woman who raised her Myrtle Stanton, and her son Doran.

A memorial service will be celebrated on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at 11:00 am at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1100 Lake Dr. SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49506, with a luncheon to follow. Dorothy’s family would like to express deep gratitude and thankfulness for her treasured friend Linda, Diane, her caring neighbors, and the truly wonderful people of Emmanuel Hospice. As we celebrate Dorothy’s life and mourn her passing, we invite you to share your memories and upload photos on her memorial page at Michigan Cremation & Funeral Care. Your stories and images will serve as a testament to Dorothy’s lasting impact and the love she shared with all who knew her.
