Doris L. Crotser

Doris L. Crotser, age 90, passed away peacefully Wednesday evening, February 17, 2021 following a lengthy illness.

Doris was born in Abilene, Kansas on October 30, 1930, the daughter of the late Harold and Margaret (Arnold) Machmer. She and her family lived through the challenges of the Great Depression and the Second World War. Her recollections of these times became treasured family stories she shared with several generations.

Her dream to become a teacher began while still in elementary school. After she graduated with her degree in Education, Doris began a long and storied career as both an early elementary school teacher and daycare owner. She had a great love of children, which was reciprocated by countless students whose lives she touched over the course of her career. She remained in touch with many of the children she taught throughout her life.

Doris loved to read and was a “life-long learner”, instilling a strong appreciation for reading and education in both her own children and her grandchildren. She was an advocate for formal and informal education all of her life. A great storyteller, she shared the wonders of whatever book she was reading with interest and skill, inspiring others to discover more about their world.

Doris was also very active in the Methodist Church in Lawrence, MI. Her book reviews and presentations became a significant part of the women’s group there and she made many lifelong friendships through the church. She believed strongly in practicing her Christian faith throughout her life, and daily sought God’s wisdom and guidance. Her Christianity was rooted in compassion and love, values she shared with her children and grandchildren as well.

Doris deeply loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and always expressed gratitude for being able to be a part of their lives. They brought her much joy. She also had a mischievous side and she was not afraid to play pranks not only on her children but also her grandchildren as well. Her family will remember her for her humor as well as for her fundamental decency.

Doris married Norman Crotser (West Michigan Conference Clergy) on December 23, 1953.  Together they made a life of their own in both Michigan and Arizona, at various times throughout their nearly 25-year marriage prior to his death in 1978.

Doris was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her sister Betty Jo Culver and brother Wayne Machmer, and her daughter Susan Lee Crotser. She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter Sharon Crotser-Toy, her son Steve Crotser (Barbara Buchanan), her beloved grandchildren Jeremiah Crotser (Melinda Mejia), Christina Crotser (Paul Merkl), and Jian Toy, her dearly loved great grandchildren Dexter and Joaquin Crotser-Mejia, and Art Toy, beloved son-in-law, as well as her adored sisters Leora Walter and June (Roger) Erdmann.

In accordance with her wishes a gathering to celebrate her life will be held later on this spring, when it is safe to do so. Memorial contributions may be made to NPH/USA, care of Joldersma & Klein Funeral Home.
