An Independence Day prayer

Celebrate Independence Day 2010

Like everything else in this summer of 2020, Independence Day will not be observed in the usual ways. Take this opportunity to pray for God’s people and their leaders.

The picnics and parades may be smaller as communities, families, and friends observe healthy precautions around coronavirus this year.

But the Fourth of July remains a special time to applaud the birth of our nation while keeping the peace, justice, and freedom found in Christ at the center of the celebration. “For freedom, Christ has set all free.” (Galatians 5:1)

Almighty God, you rule all the peoples of the earth.
Inspire the minds of all women and men to whom you have committed
the responsibility of government and leadership
in the nations of the world.
Give to them the vision of truth and justice,
that by their counsel all nations and peoples may work together.
Give to the people of our country
zeal for justice and strength of forbearance,
that we may use our liberty in accordance with your gracious will.
Forgive our shortcomings as a nation;
purify our hearts to see and love the truth.
We pray all these things through Jesus Christ. Amen.

~ Andy Langford, UMC Discipleship Resources, Prayer for Independence Day

Pastor Kira Austin-Young adds, “Whatever else is being celebrated on our national or cultural calendars, it is crucial that the gospel is at the center, a gospel that does not belong to any one country or political party. Our primary worship is for God, not country, but we can lift up in thanksgiving the freedoms that we enjoy and the beautiful land that we inhabit.”
