Church groups, families, and individuals are invited to Lake Louise Camp’s inaugural Make a Difference Day on April 29. You can also stay at the camp and join them for the whole weekend.
REV. GREG LAWTON
Director of Camping and Outreach, Lake Louise Christian Community
Lake Louise Camp on Thumb Lake in Northern Michigan is known for its natural beauty and the youth camps that take place throughout the summer. It has been a place for spiritual growth for generations. Since 2014, it has also been the site of the Boyne Country Service Project.
Rural residents in Northern Michigan have some of the same needs as those in larger cities. Older people need help with yard and house upkeep. Those living in poverty need help with keeping their homes livable. There are trees to plant and roadways to maintain. Finding help for these projects can be a challenge. That’s why the Boyne Country Service Project began and why Lake Louise Christian Community is developing new ways to serve our neighbors. Now groups of teens and adult leaders spend a week offering their time to repair homes, tend gardens, and beautify forgotten places.
Based on these summertime experiences, a new initiative is unfolding. Volunteer Service Weekends will be held twice a year to broaden the times when people can serve and grow spiritually together. The first will be held April 28-30 to coincide with our inaugural Make a Difference Day, scheduled for Saturday, April 29.
Families, groups, and individuals who come for Volunteer Service Weekends will help with projects at camp on Friday and Saturday evenings. Lodging will be provided in our retreat center or lodges. Devotionals and singing around the campfire will be offered Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday morning. Meals will be served in our dining hall.
Registration for individuals who want to serve for the whole weekend costs $75 per person. Click here to register online. If a church group would like to come that weekend, contact Rev. Greg Lawton at [email protected] or 231-549-2728 to put together a group rental agreement.
For those who are nearby or want to serve for one day, that Saturday, April 29, is our Make a Difference Day. We invite individuals, groups, and families to serve with us that Saturday as we clean up roadways, plant trees, and offer other help to our neighbors. The workday will begin at 9 am in our dining hall with instructions and service locations. Everyone will prepare a lunch from food provided by the camp kitchen and then head out to serve. Projects will be completed by 3 pm. This service day is free and open to the community, but camp staff would like to know how many people to expect. Register by completing this online form.
Lake Louise Camp and Retreat Center is located at 11037 Thumb Lake Rd., Boyne Falls, MI, 49713, halfway between the Vanderbilt exit on I-75 and Boyne Falls on US-131.
