Kids Against Hunger feeds children around the world and around the corner. East Winds District recently helped them in this effort by packing 10,000 meals.
Since its launch in 1974, Kids Against Hunger has provided over 2 billion meals for children and their families in 70 countries through the efforts of hundreds of thousands of volunteers. Freedom Foods seeks to continue adding to that total with its mission of feeding families around the world and around the corner.
East Winds District Mission Zone 4 recently became part of this feeding network packaging 10,000 meals on May 18, 2019. The effort took place at Atherton United Methodist Church in Burton, MI. Kids Against Hunger delivers the food, supplies and transportation to assemble, package and box the dry meal packets.
The meals for this East Winds District project consisted of a packet of breakfast food which included oatmeal, dried apples, spices and soy protein. Each packet will provided several meals. Zone 4 churches were able to distribute some of the boxes of food locally while Kids Against Hunger distributed additional boxes throughout Michigan.
The work project was spearheaded by the Rev. Dr. Tara Sutton of Halsey and South Mundy United Methodist churches in Zone 4, with assistance from a grant through the former Crossroads District Board of Missions. The $1,500.00 provided by the Board of Missions was matched by the Zone 4 church congregations. The matched grant paid for the food and supplies necessary for the project.
Zone 4 churches include Phoenix, Atherton, Grand Blanc, Halsey, South Mundy, Bristol, Christ Burton and Lake Fenton churches. Also, helping were Oxford, Seymour Lake, Swartz Creek, Hope Flint, and Thetford United Methodist churches.
Volunteers from St. Mary Catholic parish in Flint and Holy Family parish in Grand Blanc also offered helping hands for packing. Organizers express thanks to the more than 80 volunteers and to District Superintendent John Hice, who participated in the event. Appreciation also goes to those who contributed dollars and to the Kids Against Hunger organization.
East Winds Zone 4 churches plan to make this an annual act of service.
