The January 12, 2010 earthquake in Haiti left the world grieved at the devastation left behind. The earthquake killed over 220,000 people, wounded 300,000, and destroyed the equivalent of 120 percent of Gross Domestic Product of Haiti (The World Bank). The damage was estimated to have set back development of the country by at least a decade.
Over the past seven years, the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) received a total amount of $46,357,729. Through your generous donations and support, UMCOR was able to respond to the needs in Haiti immediately following the earthquake, as well as to commit to long-term development plans.
These long-term development plans were carried out by UMCOR, as well as through partnerships with other organizations. UMCOR was there not only to prioritize the health, education, and safety of Haitian residents, but was also to support reconstruction of homes damaged after the earthquake.
In 2016, Hurricane Matthew caused widespread damage in Haiti, and according to the Haitian government, killed more than 500 people. UMCOR responded through partnerships and provided emergency supplies to areas that were severely affected. Despite the major storm, Haitians remain resilient.
Over the last seven years, UMCOR has had the privilege of working with the Haitian community to develop resilience after the January 12, 2010 earthquake.
