What are Ministry Shares?

Last year, United Methodists in Michigan generously gave more than $8 million to mission and ministry through gifts known as Ministry Shares because we share some of the gifts God has blessed us with.

“I begin with gratitude for every dollar sent in by our local churches for our shared ministry as a Michigan Conference and as a United Methodist church through Ministry Shares. I understand the financial challenges faced by our local churches in recent years. As a pastor, I experienced a time when my local church struggled to pay them. It is my hope that as we transparently share information, and as we highlight the good we do together through Ministry Shares, we will encourage generosity.”
Bishop David Bard
Michigan Conference

How are Ministry Shares used?

These gifts provide vital support to a wide range of ministries and missions in Michigan, the United States, and around the world. They support programs that create vital congregations, bold and effective leaders, and Christ filled mission and ministry. From grants for new mission programs, to coaching for new clergy, there are countless ways these funds are used to grow our denomination in Michigan and around the world.  Examples of these programs and a complete report on how Ministry Shares are used can be found in the 2024 Annual Report you can download here.

How are ministry shares determined?

Each year, the Conference Council on Finance and Administration (CFA) creates a budget for the upcoming fiscal year. This budget is based on what Ministry Shares were received from local churches in the previous year and what will be needed in the upcoming year for the conference to support local churches. The conference budget is then reviewed, adjusted, and later approved at the annual conference in June by voting members (pastors and lay members from each local church). Once approved, the Conference informs each local church what their fair share of the Ministry Shares will be in the upcoming fiscal year. Together, these funds support the work of the United Methodist Church in mission and ministry.

Declining contributions in 2024

Currently, 331 of our 557 local United Methodist churches, about 57%, provide 100% of their ministry shares. In 2024, only 72% of the approved budget actually came in.

For some local churches, there are understandable reasons why they are unable to contribute fully. These congregations may have serious financial challenges; a sudden loss of membership, are on the path to rebuild ministry shares, or are among a handful of local churches our conference supports in an effort to establish a new faith community in an area with underserved populations. However, recognizing our Wesleyan heritage, every church is called to offer something to the shared need.

How are ministry shares calculated?

Ministry shares are calculated for your local church based on something called a Grade Figure System (GFS).

A GFS allows the Ministry Shares for your local church to be calculated based upon the financial relationship of your local church to all the other churches in the Conference.

The GFS calculation is based upon a rolling four-year average of your church’s reported annual operating expenses plus any non-United Methodist benevolences that are paid. There are many other factors that go into calculating this number which can be rather complex.

You can read how they are determined by reading these 2024-2025 CFA Policies or ask your church treasurer to explain how your Ministry Shares were calculated.

How you can meet your full commitment

If your church is not at 100%, have a conversation with your pastor and finance chair to learn why and how you can work towards meeting this goal. There are also resources you can use to help your local church move closer to, or meet, your ministry share goal.

The first step is knowing if your church meets its ministry share goal each year. Use the search engine at right to see if your church met its goal. If you need support meeting your goals, contact the conference and speak to your district superintendent. We are in this together!

In general, it helps to regularly communicate the importance of Ministry Shares to your congregation, educate members about how the gifts are used, actively incorporate giving to Ministry Shares into your budget and fundraising strategies, and work with your church leadership to develop a plan for consistent gifts towards their allocated amount; this can include utilizing tools like budgeting software, transparent financial reporting, and dedicated giving campaigns focused on ministry shares.

Transparency: Clearly explain to members how Ministry Shares are calculated and how the funds are used, highlighting the broader impact of these contributions on the denomination’s missions and ministries.

Regular Updates: Provide consistent information about Ministry Share goals and progress through sermons, newsletters, and church websites.

Leadership Involvement: Have your pastor and church leaders actively advocate for the importance of paying Ministry Shares.

Financial Planning: Incorporate Ministry Share payments into your church budget as a line item, ensuring it is a priority in financial planning.

Giving Campaigns: Organize specific fundraising campaigns or special offerings dedicated to covering Ministry Shares.

Review and Adjustment: Regularly review the church’s financial situation and adjust giving strategies as needed to meet Ministry Share goals.

Small Group Discussions: Encourage open conversations about Ministry Shares within small groups or Sunday school classes.

Member Involvement: Provide opportunities for members to learn about and participate in the decision-making process regarding Ministry Shares.

Volunteer Opportunities: Involve members in fundraising activities or outreach programs supported by Ministry Shares funds.

We are in this together! Contact your district superintendent, or contact the conference so we can talk about your concerns and offer guidance on how to meet your Ministry Share obligations.

Sharing Best Practices: There is lots to learn from from other churches within the denomination that have successfully managed their Ministry Share payments. Talk with trusted colleagues in your district.

Last year, United Methodists in Michigan generously gave more than $8 million to mission and ministry through gifts known as Ministry Shares because we share some of the gifts God has blessed us with. These gifts provide vital support to a wide range of ministries and missions in Michigan, the United States, and around the world.
