Is your church 150-years-old or older? Apply to be recognized at “Roots and Branches” on April 7.
“Roots and Branches – 2018 – 50 years of the United Methodist Church” is the theme of the convocation hosted by the Michigan Area United Methodist Church Historical Society Saturday April 7 at Leighton United Methodist Church in Caledonia, MI.
The event runs 10 am to 3 pm with lunch included. Registration will start at 9:30 am. Michigan area clergy and laity — especially historians of churches, those interested in church history and preserving it — will want to attend.
The keynote speaker, Dr. Sarah Blair of United Theological Seminary, will speak about Evangelical United Brethren Roots in Michigan. The Rev. Tom Robinson will discuss the significance of the Central Jurisdiction dismantling as part of the merger of the Methodists and the EUBs; Robinson was part of the Central Jurisdiction. Ken Gackler will talk about the history of Leighton United Methodist Church, a former EUB church. Albion College Archivist, Justin Seidler, will share how the Archives can assist the local church historian.
During a time for recognizing congregations across Michigan, certificates will be presented to those churches that have been in existence 150 years and more. Those churches 150 years or older this year will need to notify MAUMCHS by March 22 in order for certificates to be prepared. Click here for the application form.
Please note:
- those churches 175 years and above who received certificates in 2017 will not receive a second certificate this year;
