As a conference-wide focus on United Methodist identity, local churches are invited to study Laceye Warner’s Knowing Who We Are: The Wesleyan Way of Grace any time before the 2026 Michigan Annual Conference.
The Michigan Conference announces a conference-wide initiative inviting local churches to engage in our United Methodist identity by having their own study of Laceye Warner’s Knowing Who We Are: The Wesleyan Way of Grace. Rev. Dr. Laceye Warner teaches evangelism and Methodist studies at Duke Divinity School.

Published in 2024, the book has six chapters and is perfect for small groups. In addition to the book in multiple formats, there is a leader’s guide and a DVD with short videos to guide conversation. Buy and download the book and study resources. Also, if you have an Amplify Media subscription, you can stream the videos from the DVD.
Local churches are encouraged to study the book sometime before the 2026 Michigan Annual Conference, where a greater emphasis will be placed on understanding and forming United Methodist identity. Dr. Ashley Boggan, the General Secretary of the General Commission on Archives and History, will be the guest speaker and address United Methodist identity.
The Michigan Conference will also host an online study during Lent specifically for individuals whose churches are unable to offer one or who just want an experience outside their local church. More details on how to register for this online offering will be available in January.
The United Methodist Church is forging a new identity, following historic polity changes at the 2020 / 2024 General Conference, the overwhelming support of worldwide regionalization, and a new vision statement that will propel United Methodist ministry into the future.
The denomination is entering a new season of ministry, and the Michigan Conference wants to help guide United Methodists in our annual conference to better understand our identity, where we came from, and who we want to be.
