It was a muggy July day in Kalamazoo County. Gramp’s tractor chugged its way across the wheat field, without Gramp. Gramp had suffered a stroke, so it was Uncle Bob in the driver’s seat. He stopped the tractor and stood next to the combine between my mother and me. He said, “Well, if Pop were here, he’d be chewing the wheat. I don’t know why he did that, but I think we better do it now.” First, we laughed and then we chewed the wheat. Unk climbed back on the tractor seat and the harvest continued.
Sometimes we forget why we do what we do. And yet we keep on doing it and life goes on.
That’s why Advent is important. Advent is a time to reflect and remember that Jesus is coming. He is coming to remind us why we do what we do, as individual disciples and as congregations. He is coming, with truth, healing and wonderful love.
In a few days he will arrive as a baby lying in the straw, destined to become the man we call the Bread of Life.
On behalf of your Michigan Conference Staff, I wish you a Merry Christmas. May the harvest continue in the New Year.
Your Editor,
Kay DeMoss
