About The United Methodist Church

The United Methodist Church traces its roots back to the revival movement of John and Charles Wesley in England as well as the Great Awakening in the United States during the mid-18th century.

The United Methodist Church, was formed in 1967 and today serves 12 million members across the world in more than 14,000 congregations.  Learn more about who we are and what we believe.

Welcome to the Michigan Conference

The Michigan Conference comprises 600 United Methodist churches across Michigan and represents over 100,000 members and more than 600 clergy members.

You will find a Michigan United Methodist Church in the largest cities to the smallest towns. With a heart for mission, we are here to serve you!

What inspires us

The purpose of the Michigan Conference is to create disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world by equipping our local churches for ministry and by providing a connection for ministry beyond the local church; all for the glory of God.

The Michigan Conference has three main ministry center offices, nine district offices and professional staff that coordinates and conducts ministry and the business of the conference. Michigan clergy and laypersons also serve on conference boards, commissions and committees to achieve our vision.

A little history

The Michigan Conference is the creation of two former United Methodist annual conferences: the Detroit Conference and the West Michigan Annual Conference.

In June 2015,  it was announced the two  had voted overwhelmingly to create one single conference for the Michigan Area.   The Michigan Conference began operating as one community on July 1, 2018 and began legally operating on January 1, 2019.
