Special Sunday March 6

On March 6, 2016 thousands of congregations across the connection will join together in a special offering to support the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR).

When congregations participate in One Great Hour of Sharing, they help cover the operating budget of UMCOR. This makes it possible for UMCOR to direct 100% of all other contributions to the projects donors specify, instead of using their money on administrative or fundraising costs.

It is a powerful statement that donor gifts enable UMCOR to respond in times of crisis.

  • When tornadoes struck Michigan neighborhoods — Dexter in 2012 and Kentwood in 2014, UMCOR grants and supplies helped with the clean-up;
  • UMCOR responded within hours of flooding in Lowell in 2013;
  • Torrential rains drowned metro Detroit in August 2014. The Northwest Detroit Flood Relief Project is still engaged in rescuing families from muck and mold. UMCOR has given $400,000 to this effort.
  • Flint residents are using water faucet systems funded by UMCOR and more help is now being organized.

And UMCOR has touched thousands of lives all over the world with dollars contributed by United Methodists across The Michigan Area.

The United Methodist Committee on Relief thanks the West Michigan and Detroit conferences for their continued support and hopes congregations will observe One Great Hour of Sharing on March 6.
