Troy Korean UMC on the grow

The Korean UMC in Troy consecrates new space for ministry in celebration of 44 years of growth.

The new TroyHope sanctuary and multi-purpose education center was consecrated last Sunday, November 20, 2016, marking the congregation’s fourth building expansion in 44 years.

KUMC at Troy (Troy Korean), founded on November 5, 1972 by Rev. Young Bong Yoon, began with only eight members. From eight, they grew to well over 2,000 worshipers today. With the growth of the Korean-speaking congregation, the Children, Youth and Adult English (TroyHope) Ministries have flourished, requiring the numerous expansions of the facilities.

The consecration service began with a ribbon cutting ceremony by Bishop David Bard, Clergy Assistant to the Bishop, Rev. John Boley, Troy Korean’s founding pastor, Rev. Yoon, former Senior Pastor, Rev. Hoon K. Lee, current Senior pastor, Rev. Chan-young Jang, and TroyHope’s lead pastor Rev. Anna Moon. Building Chairs, Mr. Byong Yun Song and Dr. Sang Chun Lee with Rev. Seung Won Yoo from Korean Presbyterian Church at Metro-Detroit also participated.

Dynamic praise and worship was led by the combined Youth and TroyHope Praise Team and KUMC Choir. A feature song, “Thank You, Jesus”, was sung by the children in traditional Korean hanboks.

The formal consecration of the building coincides with Korean UMC’s 44th anniversary. Bishop David Bard’s sermon, “From the Apple Tree,” spoke how at first, an apple seed needs to be planted. It was Rev. Hoon Lee, the second Senior Pastor of Troy Korean, who planted that first seed five years ago for this fourth building expansion. It was an historical moment as the three senior pastors who have served Troy Korean, stood in solidarity in expressing that the new building is the passing on of their faith to the next generation.

The new sanctuary will house Troyhope Ministry, led by Rev. Anna Moon. The Junior and Senior High Ministries, led by Pastors Jane Kim and David Kang, will also occupy the new building along with preschool classrooms.

The service concluded with a chorus of “How Great Is Our God,” with blessed and grateful hearts for what the Lord has done, is doing and will continue to do.
