What does it mean to #BeUMC?

#BeUMC campaign

The #BeUMC campaign helps individuals and churches embrace how they live for Jesus in the way of John Wesley. Resources available from United Methodist Communications.

#BeUMC is a hashtag and call-to-action that invites United Methodist Church members to live out the church’s values, embrace its aspirations, and remain with The United Methodist Church even in these difficult times.

The #BeUMC message calls God’s people to embrace their Wesleyan heritage and envision a promising future. Every day is an opportunity to live into our mission and strive to #BeUMC — to be the church our world so desperately needs. We celebrate that God’s grace is not static, but meets us where we are as we grow in mission and faith.

The campaign was launched by United Methodist Communications in collaboration with other leaders. “United Methodist Communications is excited to communicate the vibrant ministry and disciple-making that happens in The United Methodist Church as people grow in relationship with Jesus Christ,” said Dan Krause, chief agency executive.

The foundational statement of the campaign is:

The United Methodist Church is founded on a Wesleyan theology of grace, anchored in Scripture, and based in the life and teachings of Jesus Christ and the continuing movement of the Holy Spirit.

There are four pillars that rest on this foundation, each with core values that shape and describe United Methodists.

  1. Disciple-Making … United Methodists are dedicated to the mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world in the tradition of John Wesley. Core values: We are Nurturing, Faithful, and Deeply Rooted.
  2. Belonging & Inclusion … All belong and will be loved in The UMC. All will be heard, respected, and engaged. All will be free to develop their personal relationship with God and to serve fully in the ministry of Jesus Christ. Core values: We are Diverse, Justice-seeking, and Resilient.
  3. Influence & Impact … With more than 12 million members across the globe, United Methodists are a powerful connection, living and sharing the grace of Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit. We are committed to work for global health, education, creation care, child welfare, disaster recovery, and countless other efforts. Core values: We are Missional, Connected, World-Changing, and Generous.

  4. Experiencing God … United Methodists embrace a church where we experience our triune God in personal and community relationships, transforming our own lives, the lives around us, and the entire world. Core values: We are Committed, Jesus-seeking, and Spirit-filled.

Campaign resources include graphics that illustrate how church members from across the globe are living out the core values that connect the people of The United Methodist Church. Local congregations may use any of the graphics from the entire collection to reflect their own activities and tell their own stories. The hashtag, #BeUMC may also be used apart from the graphics, as churches and members share stories of faith in action.

These pillars and the values they represent will be featured in upcoming editions of MIconnect.
