A task force explores new directions and programs for a campground in a country setting.
Michigan Area United Methodist Camping is breathing new life into Judson Collins Center, a United Methodist camp and retreat center in southeastern Michigan.
A task force of volunteers is developing new vision and programming aimed at growing the camp and retreat center’s ministry to children, youth and adults.
Judson Collins is ideally situated to minister to urban, suburban and rural communities. Its location in Onsted, Michigan, is within 75 miles of five large cities: Detroit, Ann Arbor, Lansing, Battle Creek and Toledo.
The Michigan Area United Methodist Camping Board, which runs the center along with eight other camps, campgrounds and retreat centers, commissioned the task force to revitalize the camp.
Board Vice President and Task Force Chairperson Rev. Paula Timm explained, “Judson Collins already has strong elements, including its farm, lake and high ropes course. We are exploring how we might build up God’s creation and sustainable living into a new, exciting and enriching program.”
Many voices and resources are helping the task force, including: the Rev. Dillon Burns, Anita Cole, Murphy Ehlers, the Rev. Terry Euper, Wendy Everett, the Rev. Sheryl Foster, the Rev. Carol Johns, Lisa Machesky, Audrey Mangum, Jaye Reisenger, the Rev. Paula Timm, and the Rev. Darryl Totty.
Judson Collins has seen declining usage in the last few years and will not take reservations for this winter. However, the Board is excited to explore new directions and has committed to improvements that all campers and retreat goers will enjoy.
