IDP Together begins January 26. Join others who are curious about intercultural differences and bridging differences in this deeply polarized time we are living in.
We might think of churches as monocultures, homogeneous in every aspect, but that is false. If you dig deeper and listen carefully, you’ll discover that a congregation is made up of many different cultures and unique experiences. It’s a rich tapestry, layered with varied colors and textures, and something that can be seen as beautiful. And often, when conflict arises, the differences become clearer, and church leaders are called to help everyone navigate them.
Are you curious about cultural differences and how they impact your congregational life and wellness? Have you experienced conflict in a church setting and would like to be better prepared to understand your own thoughts and feelings and how to respond in good faith?
The Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) is a developmental assessment tool used by many religious groups and nonprofits that provides individuals with feedback on their intercultural orientation and a customized Intercultural Development Plan (IDP) to guide their growth and learning. Learn more about the IDI and IDP.
The IDI is a 50-item questionnaire designed to assess intercultural competence, or the ability to shift cultural perspectives and appropriately adapt behavior in response to cultural diversity. There is no grade or perfect score, only a greater understanding of oneself, organization, and how to grow toward a multicultural mindset.
Beginning January 26, 2026, the Michigan Conference is offering an online course — IDP Together — to provide structure and support as people understand their IDIs and work through their IDPs.
>>>There’s still room if you haven’t taken the IDI yet. If you complete it by January 12, you will still have time to debrief with a qualified administrator and then sign up for the IDP Together course. If you would like to take the IDI, please contact Lisa Batten immediately: [email protected].
IDP Together is co-facilitated by Charity Ben and Rev. Alice Fleming Townley. This online group will meet for one hour every fourth Monday from noon to 1 pm Eastern, beginning January 26 and ending June 22. The fee for this six-month course is $25 per person or $50 for a group of three from any one church or organization. Learn more and register now.
IDP Together is intended for those who have taken the IDI within the last two years and are ready to dive into their IDP. The course is open to anyone interested in developing their intercultural competency, with a particular focus on pastoral leaders who want to understand better and engage with the diverse cultures represented in their congregations.
The goal of IDP Together is to walk alongside people as they work through their IDPs. The course aims to create space and opportunities for reflection and connection among participants, fostering a community of individuals working together to grow our cultural knowledge and competency. Here, you’re encouraged to share your adventures, setbacks, and successes.
If you have questions about IDP, contact Charity Ben at [email protected] or Rev. Alice Fleming Townley at [email protected].
