April 12, 1939 – February 18, 2024
Pastor William “Bill” A. Hertel, age 84, of Traverse City, Michigan went to be with the Lord on February 18, 2024. He was born on April 12, 1939, the son of Hugo Hertel and Ellen (Field) Hertel.
Bill graduated from Pontiac Central High School, Adrian College and Garrett Theological Seminary with a master’s degree in divinity. Bill was Ordained in the West Michigan Conference in 1966. He received his first appointment to Allen United Methodist Church, then Niles UMC, White Cloud UMC, Saint Paul’s UMC, Grand Rapids, UMC, Lake Odessa UMC, Asbury UMC, Traverse City UMC, Asbury UMC, Lansing UMC and Delton Faith UMC. He retired in 2001, moving to Fairfield Glade, Tennessee.
Bill enjoyed their travels in retirement visiting 24 Countries and all 50 States.
Bill is survived by his wife, Jan of 60 years; children, Lori (Jay) Thompson, Scott (Rowena); three wonderful grandchildren, Sofia, Elijah and Penelope; loved by his brother, Stan; sisters, Kathy (Forrest) Fairburn and Elaine (Cliff) Ashley.
Preceded in death by his parents and sister, Shirley Kell.
Memorial Services will be held 11:00 am, Friday, May 31, 2024 at the Traverse Bay United Methodist Church.
