Rev. Stephan “Steve” Weinberger went to be with the Lord peacefully on January 8, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. After a long and courageous battle with multiple ailments, his earthly struggles have come to an end. While his passing leaves a deep sense of loss, we are comforted by our faith, the prayers we have shared, and the assurance of his eternal home. In these days, there have been tears and tender embraces, quiet moments of reflection, and heartfelt gratitude for a life well lived and a soul now at rest.
Born in Detroit, Michigan, in December 1950, Steve attended Redford Union High School before earning his degree from Alma College in 1973. He went on to attend seminary in Iowa, answering a lifelong calling to ministry. Ordained as a minister, Steve faithfully served multiple congregations over an extraordinary 50-year ministry. His pastoral work was marked by compassion, thoughtful leadership, and an unwavering devotion to caring for others. Beyond the church, he was actively involved in numerous organizations and charitable efforts, consistently seeking ways to serve and uplift those around him.
Steve found joy in many simple and meaningful pleasures. He cherished “tea” with friends, enjoyed experimenting with new recipes in the kitchen, and loved attending performances at the Wharton Center. Family, cooking, and travel were among his greatest passions, all accompanied by his constant concern for others and his sincere desire to give back wherever he could.
Steve is survived by his ex-wife and best friend, Linda Weinberger; his loving children, Jesika (Kevin) Sprague and Ethan (Rachael) Weinberger; and his treasured grandchildren, Caleb and Josh Sprague, and Owen and Drew Weinberger. He is also survived by his siblings, Mike (Gwen) Weinberger, Melinda Henry, and Dawn Shannon, along with many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Ada Weinberger, and his brothers, Craig and Mark.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 17, at 11:00 a.m. at Holt United Methodist Church, 2321 N. Aurelius Road, Holt, Michigan 48842. A luncheon will follow the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Holt United Methodist Church (Community Meal Fund or Mission Trip Scholarships), Wounded Warriors, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Shriners Hospitals for Children, or the ASPCA.
