Lloyd R. Hagan

May 30, 1948 – March 31, 2025

Lloyd R. Hagan, a man of deep intellect and a profound love for the natural world, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2025, one day after celebrating a milestone 51st wedding anniversary with his beloved wife, Sueann.

Lloyd’s life was defined by a relentless passion for learning and an adventurous spirit. He served in the United States Army for three years; as a man who did not believe in killing, he served with honor as a conscientious objector. Following his service, Lloyd dedicated his career to others, teaching Special Education at the Richard A. Handlon Correctional Facility (MTU) in Ionia for 27 years until his retirement in 2003.

He was most at home in the great outdoors, finding peace and purpose in the physical challenge of the elements. Whether he was scaling a peak, navigating a river in his kayak, or logging miles on his bicycle, Lloyd lived with an energy that inspired those around him.

He and Sueann (Hagan), a retired local pastor, were married on March 30, 1974. Together, they built a life rooted in faith and companionship, reaching the incredible landmark of over half a century of marriage just before his journey came to a close.

Lloyd was preceded in death by his son, Aric Hagan, on January 3, 2003. His legacy lives on in the quiet trails he hiked and the knowledge he so eagerly pursued throughout his life. Lloyd is survived by his wife, Sueann; his daughter, Laura J. Hagan; his sister, Jane O’Brien; and his brothers, Bob Hagan and Dale Hagan. He will be deeply missed by his family, his friends, and all those who had the pleasure of sharing a path with him.
