Lenten Book Study: Knowing Who We Are

Across the Michigan Conference, many are seeking a deeper understanding of our identity, our history, and our mission. The 2026 Michigan Annual Conference, May 29-31, 2026, will focus on our UMC identity and include keynote speaker Ashley Boggan, General Secretary of Archives and History. To prepare for the annual conference, we encourage every local church in Michigan to plan a study of Laceye C. Warner’s book Knowing Who We Are.
This book offers a clearer picture of our Wesleyan way of following Jesus, focusing on core values like God’s full grace for everyone, Real-life transformation—how your faith leads to positive, visible change in your life, your community, and the world.
Whether you plan to attend the annual conference as an elected member or just want to learn more about what it means to #BeUMC and connect with fellow United Methodists across the state, we hope you’ll participate in this book study, designed to help you clarify your beliefs, articulate your values, and strengthen your connection to The United Methodist Church.
We want to ensure every Michigan United Methodist has the opportunity to participate. If your local church is not planning a study before the annual conference, we invite you to sign up for special online sessions offered by the Michigan Conference during Lent. These six sessions will be offered via Zoom from February 24 to March 31.
