It’s tax season, and there are two important things we want you to know about this year.
First, 1095-Cs have been mailed to those who have our Conference health insurance. This is a requirement of the ACA. There is not much for you to do other than file it away. It is required to be provided, and you must retain it as proof that you have qualified employer-provided health insurance according to ACA rules, but you don’t actually need the form to file your taxes.
Second, you may have heard that with Public Law No. 119-2, also known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, that tips are no longer considered taxable wages. You might think as a clergy person that you don’t get tips, but the IRS includes honorariums you receive for weddings and funerals as tip wages, so they are not taxable. The United Methodist Church published a great article to help you understand this better. While you may choose to continue filing your taxes as you always have, it’s worth sharing this information as you prepare to file.
We understand that clergy taxes are not easy. We know tax season can be a stressful time. If you ever have questions, please reach out to our office. We are here to help you navigate taxes. This is just another benefit available to you from your Michigan Conference Benefits Office. Happy tax season!
