It’s an exciting time for the MI Benefits Guy. In July, we introduced two new grant programs, and so far, we’ve awarded roughly $150,000 in grants, with another $25,000 expected based on current applications.
Of the $150,000 we’ve granted, approximately $75,000 has been disbursed so far. The remaining amount is earmarked for future years because some people aren’t taking renewal leave until 2027 or later. Additionally, the Wellness Grant can be requested to be paid out over four years, so some people chose to spread their payments.
Checks are already going out, and I’m elated that this is in the works. I’m humbled by the words of gratitude the benefits office has received about these grants.
Now, I wanted to share an update for two reasons: 1) to celebrate! And we really should. 2) More importantly, you may remember that the CBOPHB allotted $300,000 in funds for this grant program in the first year. Since the first year didn’t start until July, that’s $300,000 for the last six months of 2026. And you may notice that we’ve only granted and earmarked about $175,000 total. That means there is still grant money available! Especially when you factor in that some of those funds won’t be paid out until future years.
So, celebrate, but if you haven’t already, apply for either a Renewal Leave Grant (up to $5,000 every seven years!) or a Wellness Grant (up to $4,000 every four years!). These funds are not available to retired clergy, even if you’re still serving in the local church. We are sorry about that, but these grants were created to help prevent burnout and people leaving the ministry, so they are meant for active clergy.
