Two of the denomination’s leaders examine the Mission Statement of The United Methodist Church.
Twenty years ago, the 1996 General Conference adopted a mission statement – later amended at the 2008 General Conference. That mission is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.
Today two persons who sat on the team that brought that proposed statement forward, are looking at it with fresh eyes.
Bishop Gary T. Mueller and Mary Brooke Casad note: ” … a very interesting dynamic has developed over the past twenty years. The mission statement has been reduced to a simple sound bite … ”
They call people to re-examine and embrace this “holistic understanding of disciple-making in order to allow the mission statement to continue to “get traction.”
