Online giving option for churches

Financial impact of potential UMC split

Michigan United Methodists are worshiping on line. But is there an option to give tithes and offerings online? Yes, there is, thanks to the Treasurer’s Office. And the first two months are free.

Michigan Conference Treasurer’s Office

Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, we are finding ourselves in an unprecedented situation. There are many impacts of this time of isolation. Two are particularly troubling for the local church; the inability to gather on Sunday and the difficulty parishioners experience in giving their tithes and offerings.
The Michigan Conference is offering an online giving solution for local churches so that people can easily donate remotely. Upon your request to the Treasurer’s office, we will set up a PayPal donation button for your church on a Conference web page. We will provide the link for you to share with members. Once donations are sent in through PayPal for your church, they will be processed by the Treasurer’s Office and mailed back to the church at the end of each month. Our office will cut a check and provide a list of each person who donated, the amount given, any designations, and the fees involved.
In terms of fees with PayPal, there is a per-transaction fee and a percentage fee on each donation. To lighten the burden on local churches during this challenging time, the Michigan Conference will absorb these PayPal fees for the first two months that you are using this PayPal service to process your donations. Our reporting will show how much these fees are each month so that you can prepare accordingly if you must continue beyond the initial two- month period.
Are you interested in using this PayPal button option for your local church? Please contact Accounts Receivable Clerk, Rich Pittenger at rpittenger@michiganumc.org, or Treasurer David Dobbs at ddobbs@michiganumc.org.
We hope that this will be a valuable service to Michigan’s local churches.

Here at the Treasurer’s Office, we also understand that making “the ask” is hard in the middle of a pandemic. We invite you to join a conversation on why giving is even more critical right now and how to make giving easy for your congregation. Director of Communications Mark Doyal hosts this webinar with Young Adult Initiatives Coordinator, Lisa Batten, and Rich Pittenger. View and get your questions answered.

We want you to continue to not only survive but to thrive in these difficult times. God Bless you and your congregation.
