Board of Justice confers recognition

Faith Fowler with ATT volunteers

The Michigan Conference Board of Justice will recognize three organizations for their ministries of Peace with Justice at AC 2019.

GEORGE JONTE-CRANE
Board of Justice, Michigan Conference

This year, two more churches and one social justice organization will be honored with certificates naming them to the Michigan Conference Peace with Justice roster. The certificates will be awarded at the Board of Justice luncheon on Saturday, June 1st at The Michigan Annual Conference in Acme.

The two churches to be honored are Cass Community Church in Detroit, and First United Methodist Church in Troy. Cass Community Social Services will also be recognized as a Peace with Justice organization.

Cass Community Church and Cass Community Social Services are served by the Revs. Faith Fowler, Jon Reynolds, and Sue Pethoud. The Rev. Weatherly Verhelst pastors Troy: First United Methodist Church.

Criteria for being named a Peace with Justice organization were established by the General Board of Church and Society. The Board is housed in the Methodist Building in Washington D.C., sitting directly across the street from congressional offices and the Supreme Court.

Each of this year’s honorees have met these criteria over the years with their community involvement in areas of social justice. In most cases they have extended their social justice ministries above and beyond these set criteria.

Michigan Conference chair of Peace with Justice, George Jonte-Crane, measured these recipients according to the criteria; all were found worthy of this designation. He will make the presentations at the Board of Justice luncheon on June 1.

Congregations or groups within congregations wishing to explore status as a Peace with Justice Covenant Congregation should contact George Jonte-Crane at geopau226@yahoo.com or 313-269-8701.
