Mano a Mano aids Puerto Rico

Do you know Puerto Ricans who relocated to Michigan after Hurricane Maria? UMCOR wants to help.

MAY 15, 2018 | Lansing, Michigan (MIC) — Mano a Mano with Puerto Rico is a mission project of the Michigan Conference of the United Methodist Church in partnership with the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). Mano a Mano (Hand to Hand) will launch a six-month program in Michigan to support Puerto Ricans who were forced to leave their homeland after Hurricane Maria struck on September 20, 2017.

Two Disaster Case Managers, one based in Detroit and one based in Grand Rapids, will work until October 2018 to assist families and individuals who had to evacuate Puerto Rico to address the following areas:

  • Conduct community outreach to identify persons in need of services and referrals.
  • Conduct assessments of each person’s disaster recovery / resettlement needs and available resources.
  • Empower the disaster survivor to effectively access the resources available in accordance with the sequence of assistance for disaster recovery / resettlement.
  • Provide, refer, or otherwise arrange for individuals and families to receive needed services and resources identified in the recovery.

The deadline for applying for FEMA assistance has been extended to June 18, 2018 and the goal is to reach as many people as possible before the new deadline. Please refer Puerto Ricans who resettled in Michigan after Hurricane Maria to either Guillermina Peguero or Ruth Tobar (contact information below) and they will follow up with the families or individuals.
