Growing Our Relationship with God

Spiritual Practices (also known as spiritual disciplines) are ways that we can grow in our relationship with God. There are many different spiritual practice options. This page offers three levels of ideas based on time commitment (and mirrors the Spiritual Practices for Families page):

  • Spark – short or quick options (5-10 minutes)
  • Campfire – 15-30 minutes
  • Bonfire – Over 30 minutes

What are Spiritual Disciplines or Practices?

A spiritual discipline is “any habit or activity done with intention that helps us be more ‘in touch’ with our spirituality and with God.” (umc.org) These practices can be quick and simple or done in a longer time frame. They may be practiced every day, every week, every month, etc. Different people will be drawn to different practices. There is not a “right” way to do a spiritual practice. Spiritual Practices includes;

  • Prayer
  • Fasting
  • Reading the Bible
  • Study
  • Devotions
  • Simplicity
  • Forgiveness
  • Solitude
  • Keeping Sabbath
  • Celebration
  • Worship
  • Sacrament
  • Hospitality
  • Justice
  • Service
